Short description of work

Currently Belmont Road intersects the Metra/BNSF Railroad at an "at-grade" crossing. In order to ease traffic congestion at the railroad crossing, a railroad bridge underpass will be constructed. Upon completion, Belmont Road will go under the BNSF Railroad. In addition, a bridge on Burlington/Warren Avenue will be constructed, which will carry traffic over Belmont Road. Also a pedestrian tunnel will be constructed on the west side of the railroad underpass in order for commuters to safely access the newly constructed parking lots on both the north and south side of the railroad. Other work includes constructing a new pump station, adding a left turn lane and new traffic signals at the Belmont-Prairie intersection, retaining walls, landscaping, and lighting.

Traffic Control

This project will be constructed under several stages.
Pre-Stages include completing the runaround road, closing Belmont in order to move the railroad crossing to the runaround road
Stage 1 includes setting up the alternate route for Belmont Road and transfering traffic to the runaround road. Traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction during this Stage. Access to some sidestreets will be limited during this stage. Burlington/Warren Ave. will be closed at Belmont. Construct both underpass bridge and Burlington/Warren Ave. bridge.
Stage 2 includes shifting traffic to the west half of the grade separated Belmont and opening up Burlington Ave. to allow access to Belmont via the northwest ramp. This will allow the east half of Belmont to be constructed as well as Warren Ave.
Stage 3 includes completion of the traffic signals, pavement surface course, pavement markings, and landscaping. Traffic will be completely on new Belmont Road with two lanes in each direction. Daily lane closures will be needed for construction of this stage.

$29,738,762.43

Expected Completion Date

The contract specifies a completion date of March 21, 2013.

Construction Status Report

Belmont Road is under the jurisdiction of DuPage County, however, the entire project is being administered by Metra. Metra will post information concerning the project on their website and questions regarding the project can be directed to Metra.
