Trail Closures
Illinois Prairie Path – Aurora Branch at the CN Railroad crossing
The Canadian National Railroad will be installing safety equipment at the crossing with the Illinois Prairie Path - Aurora Branch. Diehl Road and the Prairie Path will both be closed during construction. The trail is anticipated to be closed April 20 - May 5. Detour signage is posted for an alternative route using the Prairie Path - Batavia Spur and Eola Road. View detour map.
Illinois Prairie Path – Batavia Spur at the CN Railroad crossing
The Canadian National Railroad will be installing safety equipment at the crossing with the Illinois Prairie Path - Batavia Spur. Signal installation is scheduled for May 8 - 10 and will require the trail to be closed. Please watch for detour signage that will utilize Ferry Road and Eola Road.
Illinois Prairie Path – Main Stem at the CN Railroad in Elmhurst
The Canadian National Railroad will be installing safety equipment at the crossing with the Illinois Prairie Path in the spring and summer of 2012. The work will be performed in three stages: installation of gates and signals, improvement of the crossing surface, and reconstruction of the path approaches to the crossing. Temporary trail detours may be required for this work and will be posted, as necessary. Updated information as of May 1, 2012:
- The signals have been installed but are not yet activated.
- The crossing surface is anticipated to be replaced by the CN railroad by June 1.
Great Western Trail, Lombard – at Grace Street and St. Charles Road
Bicycle and pedestrian access to the Great Western Trail from Grace Street will be detoured to Prairie Avenue and Charlotte Avenue due to the construction of a new bicycle and pedestrian bridge over Grace Street, the CN Railroad, and St. Charles Road. The bridge will eliminate the at-grade crossing of Grace, St. Charles, and the railroad. The detour route uses low traffic and low speed neighborhood streets. View Detour Map
Illinois Prairie Path – Aurora Branch– Frontenac Road to the CN / EJ&E Railroad
This segment of the Prairie Path is temporarily closed do to changed traffic patterns on the CN / EJ&E Railroad. The railroad is currently parking trains at the existing at-grade railroad crossing necessitating the re-routing of the Prairie Path. This is closed for the foreseeable future with a detour to Diehl Road while the County determines a long-term solution. View Detour Map
IL 56 Trail between the Illinois Prairie Path Aurora Spur and Herrick Lake Forest Preserve
This trail has been closed to accommodate the reconstructions of IL 56 between Herrick Road and Warrenville Road. A detour route has been determined using Weisbrook Road and the Illinois Prairie Path. Construction is anticipated to last through the Fall of 2012. View detour map
West Branch DuPage River Trail at McDowell Woods
The West Branch DuPage River Trail from Warrenville Road south into McDowell Grove Forest Preserve as well as areas within McDowell Grove are anticipated to be closed from April 2012 to November 2012. The trail is closed to accommodate construction crews and heavy equipment that are part of the Remedial Action River Cleanup, which is removing thorium-contaminated materials from the river.
